Chooglin'
“With a bleating horn section and ferocious guitar playing, the band is a boogie-rock juggernaut that has the guts and the skills to deliver greasy, proto-Stax soul with as much power and conviction as their relentless, riff-driven rockers.”…Ari Surdoval
Chooglin’ formed in the fall of ’05, featuring 2 members from Estrus Records’ band, The Midnight Evils. The Evils recorded a PEEL SESSION in 2004 before disbanding.
Chooglin’s very first show was opening for The Detroit Cobras and The Reigning Sound. They’ve shared the stage with lots of folks, like King Khan & BBQ, The Dirtbombs, The Black Lips, Jay Reatard, The Black Diamond Heavies, Rev. Horton Heat, Soledad Brothers, Wheels On Fire, The Buffalo Killers, Birthday Suits, Silver Lions 20/20, oh and so many more!
They have released 3 full length records including their latest release on BIG LEGAL MESS/FAT POSSUM RECORDS entitled, Sweet Time. The record was recorded in December ’08 at Creation Studios in Minneapolis. The studio has a rich history— recordings by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, The Trashmen’s “Surfin’ Bird”, The Repacements TIM, and many Husker Du records all were had here.
Sweet Time was produced by Fat Possum’s Bruce Watson (head of BLM) and Tom Herbers (who has made records with Low, The Jayhawks, Grant Hart) and has received stellar reviews from Hilltop to Oslo. The band has since played two Festivals in Norway—Down On The Farm festival in Halden, in August of 2009, and BERGENFEST in May of 2010. There they shared billing with Lou Reed, The New York Dolls, The Heavy and Rolling Stones’ drummer, Charlie Watts, and many other highly-regarded artists.
